FORTA® extends pavement life cycles with fiber reinforcement
|
|
There are multiple methods to determining when a roadway requires resurfacing. Officials in Wisconsin have relied on PASER, a pavement rating system that uses a scale of 1-10. Nationwide, many have relied on the similarly spelled PAVER management system and its Pavement Condition Index (PCI), developed by the Army Corp of Engineers. All pavement distresses, including severity and quantity, are recorded and tracked in random sample areas. The information is compiled into a grade on a scale to 100.
Producers and counties around Wisconsin are testing methods to produce higher-quality pavement and extend their roads' life cycles. Side-by-side comparisons between fiber-reinforced and traditional mixes have been placed over the years. Results are showing FORTA-FI® fiber-reinforced asphalt roadways score higher PCI numbers compared with roads that use a traditional asphalt mix.
In 2014, Hoover Avenue in Plover, Wisconsin received a 2-inch mill and 2¼-inch overlay with a mix including FORTA-FI fibers. The pavement averaged approximately 1 point per year decline in condition, boasting a PCI of 91 after 8 years. Non-fiber roadways nearby have experienced much lower PCI numbers: one year after a mill and 1¾-inch overlay, STH-153 had a PCI of 89.
At FORTA®, we have one goal: to create tougher, more durable pavements, providing customers with the highest quality asphalt. Our asphalt pavement projects have been put to the test in real-world, head-to-head trial projects around the country, and withstood the test of time. Contact a FORTA® representative to tour the projects in Wisconsin.
